Originating from central Mexico, the word "Chilcuague" (Chil-Kaw-Way) derives from the indigenous Nahuatl language word "Chilcoatl" (Chil-Ko-At), with "chil" signifying spicy and "coatl" depicting the root's resemblance to a snake.
Historically, the root was chewed to numb the tongue and relieve pain in the teeth and throat.
